Ever wonder why an antibiotic just doesn’t seem to work as effectively as it should?
We try to make the proper food choices that support our bodies immune system, especially when we aren’t feeling well. Sometimes these choices can affect the efficacy of an antibiotic we are taking.
While antibiotics can work on killing bacteria that causes illness, it can also kill beneficial microbes that keep our bodies in balance with absorbing the nutrients that we need for nutrition and healing.
Make sure that you read the instructions and take the proper dosage as instructed by your doctor. Are antibiotics really needed? They aren’t effective against viruses, only bacteria. The common cold, flu, most runny noses, and coughs won’t respond to antibiotics.
Watch your eating patterns. Foods rich in calcium and iron, such as dairy products, hot dogs, and iron fortified cereals, can interfere with your bodies ability to absorb certain antibiotics.
Watch your vitamin and antacid intake as well. Many multi vitamins contain iron and calcium. Make sure you take them at least three hours before or after taking antibiotics.
We have spent time talking about what not to do, now lets discuss some ideas of what you should eat. Remember grandma’s chicken soup? Eating nutrient dense chicken soup or broths are the best choices to eat while taking antibiotics. Avoid high acid foods such as citrus, carbonated beverages, tomato based products, and sugar (including sugar).
Supplement your foods with probiotics. They can be found in yogurt, miso, and other fermented types of foods.
Your body needs time to heal itself. Make sure that you get enough of rest and drink plenty of pure water. With a few simple dietary changes your recovery time will be increased dramatically.
